Many shops, restaurants and distributors now want biodegradable covers, but the word "biodegradable" is used loosely on packs and in quotes. These eight questions help you compare suppliers on facts instead of claims.
1. Which certificate covers this exact product?
Ask for the compostability certificate and check that it names the manufacturer and the type of cover you are buying. A general statement such as "eco friendly" is not proof. Our guide to EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 explains what these certificates mean, and our certifications page lists the documents Greensack can share.
2. Is it biodegradable, compostable or oxo-biodegradable?
These are not the same thing. Oxo-biodegradable plastic breaks into smaller pieces but is not the same as a certified compostable product. Read biodegradable vs compostable vs oxo-biodegradable bags before you compare quotes.
3. What is the cover made of?
Corn starch based covers are one common compostable option. Ask the supplier what the material blend is, because strength, feel and cost differ between materials. You can read how these materials break down in how compostable bags decompose.
4. Will it carry the load you need?
A cover for light garments is different from one for vegetables or a pharmacy order. Tell the supplier the real weight and use, then test the sample with that load instead of an empty cover.
5. Can the supplier print your branding?
If you want your shop name or logo on the cover, ask about the number of colours, print placement and how artwork is approved. Always approve a sample before the full run. Details on our custom printed biodegradable bags page.
6. What sizes and thicknesses are available?
Ask for the size and thickness range for your use, and write down the size you need in width, height and gusset. Do not assume the size on a competitor's pack is available in a compostable version.
7. How do storage and shelf life work?
Compostable covers should be kept dry and away from heat, and stock should be rotated. Ask the supplier how long the covers can be stored and how they should be kept.
8. Can I get a sample and a written quote?
A reliable supplier will share a sample and a written quote that states the cover type, size, quantity, printing and delivery. Price and minimum order quantity depend on all of these, so compare quotes that describe the same product. Greensack offers free samples; request one here.

Frequently asked questions
What should I ask a biodegradable cover supplier first?
Ask for the compostability certificate for the exact product you will buy, and check that it names the manufacturer and the product type.
Are biodegradable covers the same as compostable covers?
No. Biodegradable is a broad claim; compostable means the cover meets a recognised standard under defined composting conditions. Ask for the certificate, not just the word on the pack.
Can I get biodegradable covers with my logo printed?
Yes, many manufacturers print logos on compostable covers. Share your artwork, size, colours and quantity and ask for a sample to approve first.
Should I ask for a sample before ordering?
Yes. Check strength with your real load, the print quality and the feel of the cover before you place a bulk order.
